C&P Packing property in Livingston scheduled for cleanup this summer

Monday, July 9, 2018/Categories: Department of Environmental Quality/Tags:

Livingston -- The Montana Department of Environmental Quality is soliciting public comments from July 9 to August 9, 2018 on proposed cleanup activities at the C&P Packing Property next to the railyard in Livingston. Details of the proposed cleanup activities are found in the Task M Supplemental Investigation Report.

C&P Packing contains two disposal pits once used to dispose of waste from a number of activities including an animal hide and fur business, process water from the slaughterhouse and meat processing plant, and a salvage operation that recycled old batteries and railyard waste. The report provides cleanup levels and a proposal to excavate contaminated surface and subsurface soil for off-site disposal.

DEQ and BNSF evaluated three options for addressing the soil contamination in the north pit and chose Alternative 3, excavation of contaminated soil. BNSF plans to begin excavating contaminated soils this summer. Samples will be collected to confirm the remaining soil does not contain compounds above clean-up levels. The excavation will then be backfilled and reseeded. DEQ will require BNSF to conduct two years of additional groundwater sampling surrounding the property to ensure the removal of contaminants was successful in protecting the groundwater.

DEQ provides cleanup oversite of the Burlington Northern Livingston Shop Complex State Superfund Facility that includes the C&P Packing Property. BNSF purchased the property in 2001.
