Applications for Victor gravel pits open for public comment

HELENA – The Department of Environmental Quality is seeking public comment on two gravel pit permit applications for sites known as Townsend Pit 128 and Moudy Pit. The applications have been submitted by Todd Townsend and Wade Moudy, respectively. Both sites are located approximately two miles north of Victor in Ravalli County.


DEQ will hold a joint public meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2017, from 6-9 pm at the Bitterroot River Inn, 139 Bitterroot Plaza Drive in Hamilton. DEQ specialists will provide information during an open house at the beginning of the joint meeting, followed by a short presentation and a question and answer session. The final portion of the meeting will be a formal hearing for members of the public to provide oral comments about the proposed applications.  Written comments will also be accepted both during the meeting and until Dec. 19, 2017.


The permit applications can be viewed at by entering 2903 or 2949 in the “Opencut #” box and clicking the “Submit” button.


DEQ must assess the applications under a tight schedule and is seeking relevant information from citizens with knowledge of local conditions.  If comments reveal substantial issues not adequately satisfied in the proposed Plan of Operation, DEQ may choose to conduct an extended review on one or both of the applications.


It is recommended comments be submitted before Dec. 19, 2017.  Written comments can be submitted at the meeting, or by email using the “Public Comment for Todd Townsend – Townsend Pit 128” or “Public Comment for Wade Moudy – Moudy Pit” links under “Opencut News” at, or by U.S. Mail addressed to the DEQ Opencut Mining Section, PO Box 200901, Helena, MT 59620-0901.
