U.S. AND CANADIAN SPECIAL FORCES AND ‘LOVE’ AFFAIR WITH HELENA
The story of the U.S. and Canadian soldiers who came to Helena to form the 1st Special Service Force and the community that welcomed them will be told at the Montana Historical Society Thursday (May 18) at 6:30 p.m.
Jefferson County Museum Curator Terri Atwood will present a free public program, “The First Special Service Force and Helena: A Love Story,” to focus on the beginnings of the unit that went on to heroic service and legend in World War Two as the Devil’s Brigade.
Friendships and marriages bonded the unit together with Helena that last up to this day with many people calling the veterans buddies, dads and grandads. Atwood says that the personal stories of the unit go far beyond anything that Hollywood could have made up.
