State Budget Reductions Force MT Dept. of Revenue to Close Property Assessment Offices
Helena – The Montana Department of Revenue announces the closure of several of its local offices resulting from budget reductions in House Bill 2 and Senate Bill 261 from the regular 2017 Legislative Session earlier this year. The Property Assessment Division offices in Deer Lodge, Powell County and Phillipsburg, Granite County closed last week. The office in Hardin, Big Horn County will close December 1, 2017. Offices in Chester, Liberty County and Conrad, Pondera County will close December 8. The office in Stanford, Judith Basin will close December 28.
“We understand the difficulty, even hardship that these changes place on our employees and local communities, and it is with regret that we have to make them,” said Mike Kadas, Montana Department of Revenue Director. “In order to meet this new budget the department must take a hard look at how we do business and how staff is allocated throughout the state. We must make better use of telephonic and digital communication systems and more closely align our workforce with where the work is.”
The department will also move towards more electronic reporting which will provide cost savings in the materials and postage, as well as manual data entry.
More office closures are expected after the New Year. Division management is meeting with employees to discuss options.
“Change is often difficult. We will still provide property valuation services, just in a different way. It is our intention to serve the citizens of Montana in an effective and efficient way within the resources provided to the department by the state Legislature,” said Kadas.
