HELENA – The Montana Department of Environmental Quality is seeking public comment on three reports regarding the waste water facilities at the Colstrip Steam Electric Station. The reports are required under the Administrative Order on Consent between DEQ and Talen Montana, LLC at Colstrip, which provides a mandatory procedure for investigation and remediation related to the waste water facilities.

A public meeting will be held on Thursday, August 11, 2016, at the Colstrip City Hall in Colstrip at 7:00 p.m. The public is encouraged to attend. DEQ will give a presentation on the reports and will accept comments.

The reports to be discussed and are open for comment are:

  • Units 1 and 2 Stage I and II Evaporation Pond Site Report
  • Units 3 and 4 Effluent Holding Pond Site Report
  • Updated Background Screening Level Report

The site reports generally describe any releases, completed and ongoing remedial actions and water modeling performed for each site.  The other report updates DEQ’s analysis of the background water conditions for each site.

Copies of the reports are available at DEQ’s office at 1520 E. 6th Ave. in Helena, Talen Montana’s office at 303 N. Broadway, Suite 400 in Billings, and the Bicentennial Library, 419 Willow Ave. in Colstrip. The reports are also available electronically at: http://deq.mt.gov/DEQAdmin/mfs/ColstripSteamElectricStation

The 30-day public comment period starts July 22, 2016 and ends August 22, 2016. Written comments must be received by 11:59 p.m. on August 22 and can be sent to Sara Edinberg, Waste Management and Remediation Division, P.O. Box 200901, Helena, MT 59620-0901, or electronically to: DEQColstrip@mt.gov
