Public Comment Period Extended for Technologically Enhanced Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material Rules

Wednesday, October 18, 2017/Categories: Department of Environmental Quality/Tags:

HELENA –The Montana Department of Environmental Quality has extended the public comment period for the proposed rules for Technologically Enhanced Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material waste management. The comment period was set to expire on October 18 and has been extended to November 17 to allow additional time to comment on the rules.

NORM stands for “naturally occurring radioactive material”—in other words, a substance that naturally contains one or more radioactive isotopes, also called radionuclides. TENORM is NORM that has been concentrated as a result of human activities, such as manufacturing, mineral extraction or water processing. TENORM is not nuclear waste.  The proposed TENORM waste management rules include provisions for facility design and construction, operations and monitoring, spill reporting, financial assurance and closure and post-closure care.

Comments including written data, views or arguments, may be submitted to Sandy Scherer, Legal Secretary, Department of Environmental Quality, 1520 E. Sixth Avenue, P.O.
