HAUNTING PHOTOS OF HISTORIC GHOST TOWNS TOPIC AT MHS

Missoula photographer Lee Stillman will show and talk about the images of Historic Montana ghost towns on  Thursday (April 21) at 6:30 p.m. at the Montana Historical Society.

Since 1991 Stillman has been traveling the state capturing the fading remnants of historic mining caps and historical relics dating from the late 1880s into the early 1900s. His work shows the forces of elemental decay that have taken their toll on buildings and artifacts that trace back to the lives, hopes and dreams of the people who once lived and worked in the camps.

The photographs were taken at places like Bannack and Garnet as well as many ghost towns that are unfamiliar to most Montanans.

His work also records objects like gold dredges, sheepherder’s rock cairns, beehive charcoal kilns and abandoned cemetery monuments.

The program is free and open to the public.
