MHS Free Second Saturday Has What and Old Doctor Ordered

MONTANA COUNTRY DOCTOR AND WWI TOPIC AT MHS SECOND SATURDAY

                Former Montana State Medical Officer Dr. Steven Helgerson will talk about his tragic new  novel about a Montana country doctor has his battle against the Spanish Flu during World War One during April’s Free Second Saturday (April 8)at the Montana Historical Society.

                Admission to MHS is free from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. all day and Dr. Helgerson, who was state medical officer from 2006-2015, will present his new book titled “A Country Doctor and the Epidemics, Montana 1917-1918” at 1:30 p.m.

                MHS will also have the original bill signed by Territorial Gov. Sidney Edgerton in 1865 that created the Montana Historical Society. The bill came to MHS two years ago in a brown envelope with the return address. Who sent it to the Society remains a mystery.

                Helgerson’s new novel tells the story of the 1918 Spanish Flu epidemic on a small eastern Montana town. In just a few weeks the flu had killed dozens of people including his wife and unborn child. The doctor is troubled by the limitations of medical science and, the social effects the flu and WWI had on his community.

                The new book is available in the MHS Museum Store, and Helgerson will sign copies after the talk.

                Admission to the Original Governor’s Mansion at Sixth and Ewing is also free Second Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. Second Saturday is sponsored by the Helena Community Credit Union, and those who visit MHS can sign up all day for door prizes.
