LEWIS AND CLARK AND NEZ PERCE BOOK AUTHORS AT MHS
The authors of the new book “Lewis and Clark Among the Nez Perce: Strangers in the Land of the Nimiipuu” will talk about their ground breaking research Thursday (May 12) at 6:30 p.m. at the Montana Historical Society.
Allen Pinkham and Steven Ross Evans painstakingly searched the Lewis and Clark journals and Nez Perce oral history to provide new insights into what the expedition leaders understood and misunderstood about the lifeways and political structure of the “Nimiipuu.”
Noted western historian Elliott West, who wrote “The Last Indian War, the Nez Perce Story,” said Pinkham and Evans have provided new understanding of how the Nez Perce helped the expedition and were later treated by the U.S. government.
“The view is from the Nez Perce, the people who saved the Corps of Discovery, who became the republic’s firm allies, and who, seven decades later, were ravaged in the nation’s final, and most shameful, Indian war,” West said.
The new book is available in the MHS Museum Store, and the authors will be available after the talk to sign copies.
