January is National Radon Action Month

Test your home, protect your health

Friday, December 29, 2017/Categories: Department of Environmental Quality/Tags:

HELENA – January is National Radon Action Month, and the U.S. Surgeon General, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) encourage Montanans to protect their health by testing their homes for radon.

Radon is a natural radioactive gas. Although you can’t see, smell or taste it, radon could be present at a dangerous level in your home.

As the second-leading cause of lung cancer deaths in the United States and the first-leading cause among non-smokers, radon claims more than 21,000 lives annually. Testing can provide peace of mind and, if high levels of radon are detected, allow you to take steps to protect yourself and your family.

For more information about what you can do to test for and prevent radon in your home, contact the Montana DEQ Radon Control Program at 1-800-546-0483, or visit: http://deq.mt.gov/energy/radon
