MAKE MOTHER’S DAY HISTORIC AT THE MONTANA HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Mothers have long been the strength of the family.

This Mother’s Day weekend bring your mother to the Montana Historical Society on free ”Second Saturday” for a special program by the author of the new book “Bold Women in Montana History.”

Missoula author Beth Judy will talk and sign copies of the new book, which is available in the Museum Store,  at 1:30 p.m. (May 13). Admission to Montana’s Museum is free all Second Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Judy has written powerful and inspirational biographies of 11 Montana women who broke down barriers of sexism, racism, and political opposition to emerge as heroines of the3ir time. In honor of Mother’s Day, Judy will discuss the range of relationships between the women in the book and their mothers and daughters.

She will then focus on two special stories in the book: Crow medicine woman Pretty Shield, and Alma Smith Jacobs a librarian and African-American leader of Great Falls. She will talk about what they achieved and also about the mothers who inspired them to greatness.

Historic quilts from the MHS collection that related to the talk will be on display. Free Second Saturday is sponsored by the Helena Community Credit Union, and those who attend can sign up for door prizes throughout the day.

Admission to the Original Governor’s Mansion is also free with tours on the hour from noon until 3 p.m. The OGM currently has special displays in tribute to the 100th anniversary of U.S. entry into World War One – many of them focusing on the role women played on the home front.

The Museum Store also has a wide variety of books and Montana made gifts for the mothers who gave strength and purpose to your lives.
