Helena -- The Montana Department of Environmental Quality has extended the review period for the application submitted by Riverside Contracting, Inc. for a proposed gravel operation near Emigrant until August 28, 2016. Comments on the application will be accepted throughout the entire review process.
DEQ determined that comments from the public identified issues that were not adequately addressed in Riverside’s application. Specifically, local citizens identified that the proposed application does not adequately provide plans to protect cultural resources, wildlife, surface and ground water, visual impacts, and noise.
The extended review, beginning on July 1, 2016, includes the following time frames: DEQ would inspect the proposed site again, if needed, and advise Riverside of any deficiencies in the application; Riverside would have an opportunity to respond to any deficiencies identified by DEQ; the department would then have up to 30 days to review the company’s responses and decide if the application is acceptable of if another deficiency letter is warranted
If there is sufficient cause, DEQ can further extend the review periods for an additional 30 days. If DEQ determines that the application is acceptable, the department will issue an operating permit for the operation as approved.
