Montana’s Five-Year Nonpoint Source Management Plan Available for Public Comment

Monday, September 25, 2017/Categories: Department of Environmental Quality/Tags:

HELENA – The Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is seeking comments on Montana’s draft Nonpoint Source Management Plan.

The Plan focuses on strategies for reducing diffuse or nonpoint sources of pollution to Montana’s waterbodies through a program that supports voluntary improvements to land management practices.

Nonpoint sources of pollution include sediment, nutrients, bacteria and metals that can originate from forested, agricultural, abandoned mining, urban and residential areas. Nonpoint sources can harm aquatic life, increase water supply treatment requirements and limit recreational uses.

The Plan outlines goals and strategies for the next five years and identifies the resources and collaborative approaches available to reduce nonpoint source pollution in Montana.

The public is invited to comment on the draft plan by October 24, 2017. The document is available on DEQ’s website at: http://deq.mt.gov/Public/publiccomment. Comments may be submitted electronically at: http://comment.cwaic.mt.gov/ For more information, please contact Robert Ray, Water Quality Specialist, at (406) 444-5319 or by email at: RRay@mt.gov
