Montana Tax Appeal Board rules in favor of Montana Department of Revenue in income tax dispute with Blixseth

HELENA – The Montana Tax Appeal Board issued its final ruling in favor of the Department of Revenue regarding the department’s determination that Tim Blixseth, founder of Big Sky’s exclusive luxury development the Yellowstone Club, failed to report all required income on his tax returns from 2002 to 2006.

The department assessed Blixseth over $56 million in back taxes, penalties, and interest in 2009, based mostly on Blixseth’s misappropriation of more than $270 million from the Yellowstone Club in 2005. Though Blixseth disputed the department’s audit findings, the tax appeal board this past year issued a string of orders upholding every aspect of the department’s audit and assessment.

The Montana Tax Appeal Board’s decision is subject to appeal in district court.
