Education and Local Government Committee to Explore K-12 and Higher Education, Local Fire Resources, Youth Concussions, and County Road Rights-of-Way at September Meeting

The Education and Local Government Interim Committee will take on three legislative studies, hear updates on reauthorization of the federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act, the Office of Public Instruction’s rulemaking and statewide assessment activities, and the Montana University System’s Research Initiative and financial literacy efforts, among other topics on its September agenda. The meeting begins at 9:00 AM on Thursday, September 24th, and continues at 8:00 AM on Friday, September 25th in Room 137 of the Capitol. The draft agenda and meeting materials are posted on the committee’s website.

Legislators will take on the SJR 21 local fire and emergency services study with reports on the 2015 season and resource mobilization protocol from the Department of Natural Resources and Conservation, the Montana Fire Chiefs’ Association, and representatives of private sector contractors.                                                       

As part of the SJR 20 study of county road historic rights-of-way, a panel of six county commissioners will share their experiences securing legal easements for county roads that cross state trust land.

The legislators will also discuss youth concussion protection laws and programs as requested by the HJR 26 study.
