DEQ Proposes Bond Increase for Montana Resources' Butte Mine

Friday, September 4, 2015/Categories: Department of Environmental Quality/Tags:

Helena — The Montana Department of Environmental Quality has completed a five-year comprehensive review of the reclamation bond submitted by Montana Resources for the Montana Resources Mine, located approximately 1.5 miles east of Butte.

DEQ has determined that the existing bond of $52,598,404 does not represent the present costs of compliance with the operating permit and requirements of reclamation laws. DEQ is proposing to increase the bonding level to $57,577,902 to cover increased labor, equipment, and materials costs.

The company and the public will have until October 2, 2015 to comment on the proposed bond increase. DEQ will issue a final bond determination after the comment period has expired.

The company or any person with an interest that may be adversely affected by final bond determination may obtain a contested case hearing before the Board of Environmental Review by filing a written request for hearing, stating the reason for the request, within 30 days of the final bond determination. A hearing request should be submitted to the address below.

Information on the proposed bond increase and the proposed bond determination can be obtained by contacting DEQ’s Environmental Management Bureau, PO Box 200901, 1520 E. Sixth Ave., Helena, MT 59620-0901, or by calling Herb Rolfes, at (406) 444-3841 or email at: hrolfes@mt.gov
