Helena - The Montana Department of Environmental Quality’s Solid Waste Program is taking public comments on an application for a new Class II landfill to manage oilfield solid waste. The applicant is Steve Burns, doing business as Clay Butte Environmental, LLC.
The proposed landfill will be located on private property approximately 5 miles north of Culbertson in Roosevelt County. Of the 143 acres proposed for the site, 76.5 will be used for active landfill activity. The facility will be developed in 15 separate phases with a total waste disposal capacity of 9,644,748 cubic yards over an expected 31-year life.
The main objective of the proposal is to provide an environmentally sound and legal option for the disposal of oilfield solid wastes to the oil and gas exploration and production companies in the area. The purpose of this notice is to inform the public of the proposed action and to seek public participation in the decision-making process.
DEQ will host a public meeting to provide information on the licensing process and to receive comments on the proposal. The meeting will be held at the Culbertson Community Center, 210 Broadway Avenue, Culbertson, Montana on June 11, 2015 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
A Draft Environmental Assessment has been prepared for the proposal.
