The Commission on Sentencing will meet on September 20 at 8:30 a.m. in Room 152 of the State Capitol. A tentative agenda and meeting materials are now available at the commission's website: www.leg.mt.gov/cos.
The meeting starts with a presentation by victims advocates about focus groups held with crime victims and other victims advocates around the state. Then the commissioners will continue discussions with staff from the Council of State Governments Justice Center about a series of policy options first presented to them in June. The commission has worked with the CSG Justice Center throughout the interim to consider in-depth analyses of the state's criminal-justice system and to discuss options for data-driven policy recommendations the commissioners could make to the 2017 Legislature.
The discussion will include a review of several preliminary bill drafts that would implement some of the policy options, as well as an update on the recommendations made recently by the commission's Statute Review Subcommittee. Copies of the policy options, subcommittee recommendations, and preliminary draft legislation are available at the commission's website.
