Sites are located in Wheatland and Golden Valley Counties

HELENA – The Montana Department of Environmental Quality is accepting public comment on a request by Big Sky Masonry Stone to partially release reclamation bonds held for two rock quarry sites. The sites are located near the towns of Shawmut and Barber in Wheatland and Golden Valley counties.

DEQ currently holds a reclamation bond totaling $50,000 for operations at the sites. The company is requesting a bond release of $9,725 at the Shawmut site for completed grading, soiling, and vegetation of 2,434 acres, most of which were never disturbed. Bonding would be retained for 10 acres at this site. A release of $1,885 is being requested for reclamation done at the South Barber site and bond would be retained for weed control.

The department has inspected the sites and proposes to release bond as requested by Big Sky Masonry Stone. The department would retain bond in the amount of $38,390.

DEQ may not release or decrease a reclamation bond until the public has been provided an opportunity for a hearing and a hearing has been held if requested. A request for a hearing or comments on the proposed bond release must be submitted by August 15, 2016, to DEQ, Hard Rock Mining Bureau, PO Box 200901, 1520 E. Sixth Ave., Helena, MT 59620-0901, or by calling Herb Rolfes at (406) 444-3841 or e-mail at: hrolfes@mt.gov
