Helena -- The Montana Department of Environmental Quality has completed a comprehensive five-year bond review of the operating permit held by Stillwater Mining Company for the Nye Mine. The mine is located in Stillwater County.
The review demonstrated that the current bond does not accurately reflect the estimated cost to the state to ensure compliance with the Metal Mine Reclamation Act. As a result, DEQ is proposing to increase the bond from the current level of $19,500,000 to $21,183,643.
The bond increase reflects the mine closure plan approved under Amendment 011 and increases in the cost of equipment and personnel since the last bond was calculated. The proposed increase also includes additional bond required due to DEQ’s approval of amendments and minor revisions to the operating permit.
DEQ will issue a final bond determination in 30 days.
